His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. —2 Peter 1:3
Few things are more frustrating than opening an incomplete box, one that you were told would contain all the components required to assemble whatever it is you purchased. You get to one of the final steps of assembly and then realize that a piece is missing! And, of course, you can’t just go back to the store and get the one missing piece. Oh no, you have to return the entire “almost” completed assembly for a brand-new kit that, of course, requires starting all over again.
When we built our house, I purchased a ceiling fan from a local home improvement store. After I put “almost” the entire thing together, I recognized that the bottom decorative cap that covered the electronics was missing from the box. I was confident they’d take the fan back, but I thought, “Oh, man, they’re just going to give me a new ceiling fan box and I’m going to have to start over.” The upside would be that, having gone through the process once already, I could probably cut down the ten-hour assembly time!
So I talked to the guy at the return desk and he walked me to the aisle where the fans were and took a duplicate fan box off the shelf. But instead of handing me the box, right there in middle of the aisle, he cut the new box open, took out the cap, handed it to me and said, “There you go.” Then he taped the box up again and placed it back on the shelf. I thought, “The same thing is going to happen to the next guy!” (But, at that point, I didn’t care—I took my cover plate and left.)
But have you ever felt that way about yourself? “Maybe I just don’t have what it takes to be a good wife, or to be a good parent, or to be a spiritual leader for my family.” “Maybe our family is just lacking something, and we’ll never have what we need to be successful.” Well, if you’re in Christ, you’re going to have to get over that kind of thinking! Your life-building, marriage-building, family building kits are all intact. None of them are missing anything, including the electronics, which is the indwelling presence of the Spirit of Almighty God, one of the perks of having committed your life to Christ.
