Green Acres

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.   —Jesus

Green Acres is the place to be.

Farm livin’ is the life for me.

If you’re over 55, you remember it like it was yesterday.

Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh. Duh-duh!

If you’re not, then let’s just move on.

God the Father. God the Farmer. Same God.

In the parable of the vineyard, Jesus clarifies the mission of His church about as clearly as anyone could—to bear fruit. No surprise there, because no farmer has any other vision for his farm. Ever.

How long would farmers stay in business if their mission statement reflected any of these as their bottom line? “Our farm exists…

  • …to use state of the art machinery.”

  • …to own cool looking barns.”

  • …to hire as many farmhands as possible.”

  • …to use the most environmentally friendly fertilizer possible.”

  • …to grow healthy looking green plants.”

All of those might have a place in the process, but the bottom line never changes—what will the harvest look like? Without a harvest, there are neither resources to sustain a farm nor a good reason to even have a farm. If God’s a Farmer (and a pretty good one, I’m pretty sure), and He’s invited us to work on His farm, then we better learn the most fundamental lesson of all about farming—we’re all doing it for one reason.
